This Project started out as a redesign of an existing run down Elevated home in Stuart Park, Darwin. The client loved the location but was not overly attached to the existing house. Darwin’s elevated houses were built after the cyclone and were cut and pasted to each site to help with house shortages. No real thought was used to ensure the best of the site's orientation. After realising we were not going to get the best from using the existing residence we decided to start from scratch. I don't like to waste such a building but they were able to relocate it and sell it to help with the build costs.
After we started from a fresh site we were able to locate the residence on the site to orientate the building. The best way was to capture the tropical breezes, and allow for direct attachment of indoor living and out. We worked closely with the Interior designer and client to achieve an open tropical house, with high ceilings, lots of louvers, including majestic full height doors to allow for full air flow throughout the residence. Spacious rooms and a seamless connection to outdoor living and entertainment. A cyclone shelter was also incorporated to be an important component of the residence which could also be separated from the main residence and would have a bathroom for use if needed.
